Parole and Probation Arrests Child Pornography Suspect
Convicted Man Using Internet

Officers from the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation today arrested 56-year-old John R. Stephens on child pornography charges.

Officers from the Division's Sex Offender Unit in Las Vegas discovered well over 35 images of naked children on Stephens' personal computer during a visit to his home near Buffalo and Charleston. He was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. The computer was seized for evidence.

Stephens maintains he did not know this usage of his computer was illegal. He stated he looks at approximately 100 child pornography pictures per day and downloads possibly two at a time.

Stephens was arrested by Las Vegas Metro Police in August, 1998, and charged with 50 counts of Possession of Child Pornography. He eventually entered an Alford plea on two counts of possession of visual presentation depicting sexual conduct of a person under 16 years of age. On January 11^th of this year, District Judge Jeffrey Sobel sentenced Stephens to 19-48 months in prison, which was suspended pending 5 years of supervised probation.
