Nevada State Fire Marshal Offers Fire-Safe Tips for Summer
National Fire Administration Provides Valuable Information for Barbeque Safety
"Address fire safety issues before beginning any summertime barbeques," is the message from Acting Nevada State
Fire Marshal Bryon Slobe. Reduce your chance of experiencing a fire-related fatality or injury by following these
safety tips provided by the US Fire Administration:
Barbecues
- When barbecuing, protect yourself by wearing a heavy apron and mitts that fit high over your forearm. If
you get burned, run cool water over the area for 10-15 minutes. Do not use butter or a salve, as these
substances seat in heat and can cause further damage to the tissue. If you receive a serious burn, seek
medical attention immediately.
- Keep barbecue grills away from anything that can burn. Stay with the grill when lighted and keep children
and pets at a safe distance.
- If you are using a charcoal grill, only use starter fluids designed for barbecue grills. Using too much fuel
or the wrong type of fuel (i.e. gasoline) may cause a "flash over" (explosive flames) condition. Soak coals
with water before you discard them and leave the grill away from the house until the grill is completely cool.
- If you are using a gas grill, store the cylinder outside and away from structures. Frequently check for any
leaks in connections, follow manufacturer's instructions and if necessary, have the grill repaired by a trained
professional.
